The City of Germantown has an extensive parks system with many different locations and areas to be explored. This parks system is an extension of the Germantown Greenway system. A planned twenty two mile long stretch of nature that is perfect for any outdoor excursion. This existing part of the Greenway has been built with an asphalt pathway for bicyclists, joggers, and walking. The planned system has been designed to be progressive and encompassing so that it will eventually encircle the entire area with parks and nature areas for all to enjoy. One of the most recent and popular areas is the 70-acre greenway system called the “Wolf River Nature Area.” This beautiful stretch of land within the greenway system offers an unprecedented view of the surrounding area along with many educational displays. Also home to many informative plant displays, this is one of the best outdoor educational opportunities in the area. Along with all of this there are several interpretive stations to offer.
The end goal of this new system is to provide schools and neighborhoods with an area to be outside and in nature. This goal has been well received so far and hopefully will continue to progress in the future. As the different parks and areas of the Germantown greenway system have been constructed, great care has been taken to make them as high quality of a park system as possible. Once complete the new system will also link the parks that are currently in the Germantown area. In doing this, the city of Germantown hopes to create a healthy outdoor culture unlike anything seen before.
Although the project has seen a good bit of challenges arise throughout its introduction, but progress has been made at an astounding rate. Throughout 2007, the first two areas of the greenway were started. The walnut grove section, which was first to be completed in 2010, is close to the wolf river area. This part of the greenway includes a walking path along with many other amenities. The next part of the trail to make good progress was the area close to Shady Farms. This beautiful locations is one of the best pieces of land in the city. It’s hard for one to think of a better location for a park. This section includes nearly four miles of perfect trails for anyone who wishes to use it.
There is still much more to come from this new system and it is exciting to see what the future holds. The most recent part of the greenway is planned to be started in or around the midtown area of Memphis. This area poses a few very distinct challenges, but nothing that cannot be overcome with enough hard work. The estimated completion date for the entire greenway park system is expected to be within the next 15 years or so. Hopefully, with the aid of sponsors and supporters from around the surrounding area, this park system will finally take form and become something for everyone to enjoy.
